Saving a Pulmonary Embolism Patient at Makati Medical Center

What should’ve been a simple lap to open chole turned into a race against a pulmonary embolism.
Postoperative patients are particularly vulnerable to PE due to a combination of factors: prolonged immobility, surgical stress, inflammation, and a temporary hypercoagulable state that increases the risk of clot formation. What begins as an uncomplicated recovery can, in rare but serious cases, escalate rapidly.

That was exactly the situation here.
Fortunately, preparedness made all the difference. Within just two hours, the team at Makati Medical Center moved swiftly to revascularize the patient. The procedure was led by Dr. Alvin Tin (Interventional Radiologist), with the support of Dr. Glessica You-Kato and Dr. Lim Lacson.
The Penumbra Indigo System was deployed to tackle a massive, stubborn clot burden. On the very first pass, large chunks of thrombus were immediately retrieved, followed by several additional passes to fully clear the obstruction and restore pulmonary blood flow.
A reminder that postoperative PE can strike without warning—but with vigilance, expertise, rapid coordination, and the right technology, outcomes can be dramatically changed when every minute counts.
